Description
The coupling between spin waves (magnons) and acoustic waves (phonons) is a crucial phenomenon with significant implications for spintronics, magnonics, and quantum materials research [1]. The advance of the computing technology allow us to use numerical methods to investigate magnon-phonon coupling beyond simplified models used so far. We show that a significant role in the magnetic field effect on acoustic wave propagation is played by its dispersion [2]. The k-wave vector dependence in magnetic field has a significant impact on the low-field regime, i.e. close to magnon-phonon resonance, and therefore, in contrary to the high-field regime, it can’t be neglected.
In our work, based on the example of bcc Fe, we perform a detailed analysis of spin waves to lattice vibrations coupled effects using numerical atomistic simulations and also demonstrate various k-wave vector dependences in the low magnetic field using our web-based interactive tool called VelCrys [3]. We analyze the role of the direction of the magnetic field in the change of sound wave propagation speed for the bcc Fe crystal for three types of acoustic waves (one quasi-compressional wave and two quasi-shear ones).
