Description

The Alpha oxygen represents a highly reactive, extra-framework oxygen species stabilized within zeolite matrices via the low-temperature catalytic cleavage of either nitrous oxide or dioxygen. Characterized by an exceptionally high oxidation potential, this species is capable of mediating the direct, selective partial oxidation of methane to methanol under ambient conditions. Consequently, the Alpha oxygen serves as a highly attractive paradigm in the field of heterogeneous oxidation catalysis.[1]

Despite its technological significance, experimental elucidation of its precise coordination geometry, structural dynamics, and reactivity remains constrained. To resolve these ambiguities, density functional theory (DFT) simulations were employed to model the mechanistic pathways governing the Alpha oxygen formation, stabilization, and interfacial reactivity. This presentation provides an overview mapping the structural, electronic, and catalytic properties of this potent oxidant.[1]
