Travel to Ostrava

Hackathon will be held in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Below you can find detailed information about possible routes and other useful information on transportation in Ostrava itself.

Option #1: Flight to Ostrava

Ostrava has a very own airline hub, Leos Janacek Ostrava Airport (link) offering flights to London-Stansted and Milan Bergamo. If you happen to have a layover at these airports, this is an option you might want.

Option #2: Flight to Katowice or Krakow (both cities are in Poland)

Katowice and Krakow airports are served by many airlines, connecting the region with numerous worldwide destinations. There is a LEO Express shuttle service connecting both airports with Ostrava (schedule). You should get a ticket to Ostrava-Svinov.

Option #3: Flight to Prague

Václav Havel Airport Prague offers flight connection to large number of worlwide destinations. If you decide to fly to Prague, we highly recommend you to continue your journey to Ostrava by train. The Prague main train station (Praha hlavní nádraží, Praha hl. n.) can be reached by taxi or by the Airport Express Bus (45 minutes, tickets can be purchased from the driver [cash-only] and cost 60 CZK [1 EUR ~ 25.8 CZK]).

There are 3 railway companies operating fast trains between Prague and Ostrava. The ride takes about 3 hours and the tickets can be purchased at the railway station before the trip. One-way ticket prices vary between 350-600 CZK. Sometimes it is cheaper and more convenient to book them in advance through an on-line system (especially at peak times such as Friday/Sunday evening). Feel free to contact us for assistance with this. No matter which option you decide for, always get a seat reservation.

Possible railway companies:

  • České dráhy (ČD, Czech Railways, national carrier) and their SC Pendolino or other EC and IC trains.
  • Regio Jet, a private railway company.
  • Leo Express, a private railway company.

You want to get a ticket to Ostrava-Svinov, if you are going straight to the venue or to the accomodation in Hotel Garni on the University Campus.

Option #4: Flight to Vienna

There are direct trains from Vienna International Airport to Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof, Wien Hbf): a fast train (IC or Railjet) twice an hour, travel times are between 15 and 18 minutes. Tickets cost €12 (single) €21 (return).

Ostrava is well served from Vienna Main Stations and the ride takes about 3 hours. Train connection can be found here.

It is also possible to use the Leo Express shuttle bus. Timetable is available here. Ticket prices vary between 390-450 CZK. You should get a ticket to Ostrava-Svinov.

Getting around Ostrava

There is a tram stop Svinov mosty horní zastávka very close to the railway station. Take a westbound tram no. 7, 8 or 17 heading towards Vřesinská. Take off at the stop Rektorát VŠB and walk to the venue, it takes 10-15 minutes (see the map below).

Alternatively, you can take bus no. 37 directly from Svinov nádraží (in front of the railway station building) to Studentské koleje (last stop), which goes every 20 mins. From there, it is only 200 metres to the Hotel Garni.

Public transportation fares are somewhat complex in Ostrava. For travelling from the train station to the venue choose one of the following options:

  1. If you have a debit or credit card with contactless technology (Visa and Mastercard only), you can purchase an electronic ticket by swiping it to an electronic reader on a tram/bus immediately after entering the vehicle. A simple swipe debits 20 CZK from your account and allows you to travel to final destination of the given vehicle.
  2. You can also buy a paper ticket in amber ticket machines on selected tram stations (cash only) and newspaper stands (usually cash only too). For travelling from the train station to the venue you will need a 30-minute ticket (20 CZK).
